Here’s a possible book cover set-up I shot several months ago, It’s theme being loosely based on Graham Greene’s famous;
‘Travels With My Aunt’ novel, but I didn’t like the final ‘before’ result as it just didn’t ‘mesh up’ so I filed it under ‘problem images’ and forgot about it until we were trialling the new Celestial pack and suddenly it worked! The final sepia effect pulling it all together, both softening and adding a real vintage travellers feel.
For processing I chose a rectangle field blur effect in photoshop to soften the side edges and top of the panama hat that would have been hard to add a book cover text over, it being so hard edged. My old British passports had their edges clipped and you can see it on the before image, so I did a quick clone job to repair the missing edge.
Firstly, I slightly tweaked the colours with this summers new Nik Fly Pastel presets collection, then opened the New Celestial Texture pack and loaded it into Russell Brown’s free Adobe paper Texture Panel and quickly started playing with the yummy Celestial textures!
I ended up using three Celestial textures before finally being happy with the finished top image.
I then emailed it to one of my book cover agents and thankfully they snapped it up, not a bad several month trip for a ‘problem image’!
